CTN News : Even Trash Can be Transformative (New York, NY) How many times have you walked past piles of garbage bags on the street and thought that they are disgusting or worse, already inured to the sight of these eyesores, just ignored them altogether? Well, at least one artist, Adrian Kondratowicz, is seeking to transform, forever, the way we view trash, while aspiring filmmaker Sheryll Franko and photographer Gina Marie are documenting the process. Via a project called TRASH:anycoloryoulike, a novel citywide art intervention that will traverse the New York City streets this summer before moving on to other localities, the garbage bags on representative city blocks will be replaced with new, colorful artist-created bags. Instead of ewww, well be saying wow. TRASH seeks to transform and beautify neighborhoods with the cooperation of local business owners and residents.
The project has a twofold purpose: beautification and awareness. By replacing the drab bags with vibrant colors, neighborhoods will look better and even more important, will bring attention to how much we consume and how much garbage we create. And the bags themselves can be custom ordered in a panoply of colors, including polka dots, and are good for the environment. Each bag is represented to be 100% biodegradable and naturally scented to repel bugs and vermin. Orders can suggest colors except for blue or clear (reserved for recycling) or red (reserved for hazardous objects). The possibilities for participatory community projects are many. For instance, sponsoring installations on streets and yards adjacent to public schools seems a particularly meaningful and efficient teaching tool, both informing and enhancing the experience of our youngest citizens. Ms. Franko will document the project on film, as well as community interaction and receptiveness, culminating in a video which, no doubt, will have much to teach us about ourselves. If you are in NYC and wish to see this project in action, the next installation will take place on Friday, July 18 in Nolita, on Elizabeth Street, between Houston and Spring Streets.
